La storia descrive un possibile futuro terrestre dove la tecnologia è migliorata ma non particolarmente rispetto al passato, dove l'uomo ora abita anche sulla luna e dove è sorto un grosso problema mondiale, il problema dei Debris spaziali. Un debris è letteralmente un detrito, il problema è che questi detriti sono altamente pericolosi per i viaggi, basti pensare che un chiodo può danneggiare in maniera catastrofica una nave spaziale di piccole/medie dimensioni. Planetes narra la storia di un gruppo di persone che vivono in quest'epoca, e loro sono appunto dei "ripulitori di debris" un pò come gli spazzini.
La rappresentazione è molto realistica e vengono tenute di conto le leggi spaziali, sia visualmente nel manga, che visualmente e dal punto di vista sonoro nell'anime.
